VICTORY!
Well I called it some months ago, but it doesn't make the victory any less sweet. Thank you to all those who have contacted me tonight and kept me abridge of the news on the election and to all those who celebrated with me, the sweetest win of all. It's been more than 20 years since I've been as confident of a victory to the ALP and it's been about as long since I've been as optimistic about the policies for the future of our great country. Of course I hadn't dared to hope that Bennelong would be won, but dear God - it looks like it is!
Congrats to Kevin Rudd and his team and let's hope that Australia can move forward from this result and produce a better, fairer future for our country.

They have their work cut out for them. Not only will we have the climate/energy squeeze over the long term, until the whole world is run on new energy sources--

--but in the shorter term, the USA is about to go into recession, likely taking Asian manufacturers (like China) and world commodity exporters (like us) with it, unless China, India, and the Islamic world can substitute for the loss of US/EU consumer demand. World inflation is driving interest rates up. The decade-long housing bubble and rise in personal debt will have to end.

Yep - agree with all that, Mitch. However, the manner in which this can be addressed is through working with both the traditional consumer nations and with the growing BRIC countries to develop a global ecnomy which is less obsessed with consumption and more conscious of environmental and financial balance.
And I'd much rather have Rudd, Brown and (H) Clinton driving that, than the old trio of Bush, Blair and Howard.
