The Daylight Savings Campaign continues...

Just a quick note to record the fact that we've cracked the 10,000 signatures mark on the petition for Daylight Saving in South Eastern Queensland.

I'm now trying to organise a rally and meeting between South Eastern Queensland Lords Mayor and the Premier to discuss the implementation process for DLS, and I'm suggesting this occurs in March 2007. Any assistance in lobbying Mayors to participate in such an event will be gratefully received!

The Queensland Daylight Savings debate.
I would like to suggest a compromise option to the Daylight Savings issue that is currently under review. I suggest the simple solution of putting the clocks forward an hour for summer – and leaving them there to remain through winter too.
The common objection put forward against DLS is always ‘why should I mess around with my clocks twice a year just so you can get more day light in the summer – can’t you get to work an hour earlier!’ Obviously many people have their working times dictated to them by real life issues and cannot simply go to work an hour earlier which is why the issue remains. However, the DLS objectors, when questioned regarding being happy about how soon it gets dark in winter, do not like the early darkness. The suggestion targets both issues – clocks would remain the same after the first change, and most would be happy about the extra light in winter.
But importantly, the purpose of day light savings needs to be remembered – To save energy, as this is of great importance to the Australia, USA have recently extended there DLS time to 8 months for energy saving issues.
The unused daylight from the morning period, when people are in bed, is transferred to the evening, when people are up and active, and energy is saved as, for that additional hour of light in the evening, lights no longer need to be used in that time. This saving is also is just as applicable to us in Queensland in the winter months as in the summer ones. Additionally, the winter twilight at 5 pm is the most dangerous time of day with many people returning home from work at this time.
So why delay the change ant longer?
