Daylight Savings for SE Qld!
I have begun a petition to introduce Daylight Savings for the Sth East Queensland corner. Now I REALLY need everyone's help with this. I am unwilling to tell people to pass on an email to everyone they know, but if you can manage to get enough signatures on this petition, hopefully the legislators will see the light (quite literally) by the time Daylight Savings starts again in the southern states.
As someone who has to deal with time shifts for appointments every day of my life, I'm consistently frustrated with the changes between Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane time over the summer months. I know I'm not alone. And those who cite the heat and the 1992 Referendum result as arguments against Daylight Savings have got to be kidding themselves don't they? The population and business development in Brisbane and the Sth East Qld corner have changed dramatically over the past 14 years, so the 1992 referendum result is utterly irrelevant. The heat is less of a problem for the Sth East corner than for FNQ, and importantly, the light in this part of the world lends itself to Daylight Savings - instead of sunrise at 5am, and a hot and uncomfortable trip in to work at 7:30am, we'd have sunrise at 6am and arrive at work before the heat of the day sets in. Let's face it, we live in the best part of the world for long balmy evenings. Yet even in the height of summer, the sun goes down before 7pm.
It's time we woke up to the beauty of Daylight Savings and enjoyed this most gorgeous place at the end of a productive day. Please join me in signing this petition and bringing the Sth East Qld corner in line with the rest of the eastern seaboard.

Absolutely right. It really makes Queensland seem so completely out of touch by refusing to join the rest of the eastern seaboard.
Daylight Saving should not be left to individual States - it should be a Federal decision.

Mum - I have to say that I strongly disagree with the sentiment about daylight saving being a Federal decision. I would go so far as saying this is ludicrous!
I too am in a position of having to deal with time-zone differences with my Mexican colleagues and clients during the summer
months and did previously sign the
"Daylight savings in Queensland" state government petition requesting that the whole of Queensland have daylight savings inline with the south-eastern states. This was unfortunately quashed, due to state-wide adoption difficulties, blah, blah, blah.
However jj’s suggestion of having daylight savings in SEQ might be a viable solution, except for the difficulties involved with deciding and applying boundaries for the TZ. How far north? Up to Bundy? How far west? Toowoomba? Oakey? Educating people about the boundaries could make
it unworkable, therefore I think on the whole the idea is great, but the implementation could be unwieldy. :(
JJ - Did you consider lodging the petition with an official
Queensland Parliament Petition?

I'm definitely for the introduction of daylight savings. I'm naturally pessimistic though; I can't remember how many of these petitions I've signed. Actually, I can, and it's three.
I don't travel a great deal, but the place I work has branches all over Australia, and the time differences are just a hassle. It's understandable having a time difference in WA, but Sydney? Melbourne? Why?

I work in Brisbane for a company that has it's HQ in Adelaide & we seem to manage OK. London is the financial capital of the world and it manages to deal with the rest of Europe and with America all on different time zones.
Splitting Qld into two will only make those outside the SE corner feel marginalised & we'll have all sorts of redneck country based political parties pop up again, leading to an unstable Parliament where no one Party has a majority and you have those bizarre, unprofessional people like that "Santa Claus" MP that One Nation gave us running the State. THAT will do a lot more damage to Qld than a ONE HOUR time difference.
As I said, Europe & the USA manage to do business on many different timezones, as does any eastern Australian business that deals with SA, NT or WA.

The issue that hasn't gone away since 1992 is that our state compatriots from northern Queensland will start a media campaign to stir the compassion of their southern cousins once again. The size of Queensland is such that a single timezone is problematic. We'll always have a situation where those in Mount Isa and Cairns will be having their children return home from school in near darkness at 3:30 pm if the clocks are shifted for the whole state. We probably need to look at having western QLD go into the Northern Territory timezone in the summer. After all Broken Hill is geographically in NSW but is on the SA timezone. However, any inspection of a map of QLD indicates that we need to include all of QLD from a longitude west of Cairns or Townsville in the NT summer timezone which is going to be politically tough to carry out and will re-ignite the northern successionist argument.

My husband and I actually moved back to Queensland 10 years ago to GET AWAY from daylight saving. I've lived 17 years of my life on daylight saving and I think that's enough for one lifetime. In Europe it wasn't so bad because the sun rose so early in summer. But in Sydney, which was on a much lower latitude, we had to get up in darkness virtually all year round. It was like living in permanent winter!
The time zone issue is also vastly exaggerated - I deal with interstate and overseas colleagues every day, without any problem. I think business makes a big thing of the time zone difference more because of misplaced insecurity rather than any real disadvantage.
If you don't like daylight saving, or have listened to too much to all that 'faded curtain' ridicule, you might like to check out this website:www.nodaylightqld.com.

Get with the times. More waking daylight hours not more sunlight.

My suggestion is that if you love daylight savings so much, go back to Victoria. I object strenuously to having my routine disrupted by an hour of time difference twice a year. I believe that many southerners who have come to Qld love it because we don't have idiot time imposed upon us every summer. I don't think daylight saving is a good thing and reasoning that we are out of step with NSW doesn't wash. Just because they chose to live under an unreasonable regime is no reason for us to do the same. Let's show our individuality, after all we are living in the smart state, although our average IQ is diminishing with the influx of Victorians of recent time. Good luck with your campaign but I think it is just plain stupid and boring, once again.

The hour delay on live tv is something that gets me at times such as the Australian Open Tennis finding out the winner an hour later etc.
Now in Qld we do not have twilight like they do down south so when the sun goes down its dark pretty much right away meaning it would be dark just after 8pm anyway and the southern states would still be bright and sunny.
I feel daylight savings would be best as North as Rockhampton and west as Toowoomba Would be the way to go.

I cannot believe that the state that should have daylight saving doesn't, it is beyond all comprehension. At least give the people in SE section of Queensland what they want. On the Gold Coast we are closer to NSW than we are to the northern part of the state so it makes sense to have the same time slot as NSW.
In SEQ it won't be dark when we have to get up and leave for work. Another ridiculous argument is that it will fade the curtains – this argument is just so inane I can’t believe that anyone took the comment seriously. Yet another argument is that it will affect mothers and babies PLEASE, babies have survived the time change for years in the other states so has live stock for that matter.
Also, I can't believe that, at the very least, it is not put to a vote, how can the Government be so totalitarian on this subject - don't we have rights - apparently NOT. Why should the minority vote rule?????

We must have daylight saving. We will then be in step with the rest of Australia.

I can't believe how backward the so called "smart state" is. I hate being woken at 4.30 a.m. every morning, don't go to bed early, can't sleep much, and once is daylight have to get up. The Gold Coast is a huge tourist area, and should be on daylight saving, however our new Premier has been brainwashed by the former Premier. Why can't we go it alone and just do it without her. She should take note of all the petitions and at least allow another vote on the subject. You know why she doesn't> Knows she will lose. Well, she will sure lose next election vote. This is not democracy at all.

I used to live in Toowoomba approx 30 years ago but have resided in Sydney since. Now nearing retirement I plan to move back to QLD in 3-4 years.
I love daylight saving; it actually gives you that extra time when you get home from work to be able to do things outdoors...game of golf; some fishing; mow the lawn. Why at least a 3 year trial isn't considered is beyond me; give it a try, and if you don't like it after 3 years then can it. Use your heads, people.
When I was living up there Joh & Flo ran the state, and we all know that when the rest of the Eastern Seaboard moved to daylight savings Joh used to think the sunshine shone from his backside, and he wasn't about to get up an hour early for anyone...common people, you're not still that gullible, are you?
However if the state ever ventures down this path, the whole state would need to do it.
