Is there an Editor in the house?
From Editor & Publisher Online....
The New York Times Co. announced a staggering staff reduction plan Tuesday that will likely mean some 500 job loses (sic) at the company's many properties, including an expected 45 newsroom positions at The New York Times newspaper and 35 at The Boston Globe.
Perhaps those who keep their jobs will be those who can spell.

Just yesterday I was commenting to someone about how people just can't get the whole "loose" versus "lose" thing right either.
Or "they're" versus "their" versus "there"
Or "you're" versus "your".
For some reason, getting those mixed up really yanks my crank ... even though I'm guilty of massacring the Engrish language myself.

For me, the worst is "affect" versus "effect". I think there are about four people in the entire world who actually know how to use "effect" as a verb correctly, and thus I tend to tell my students to avoid it unless they REALLY know what they are doing.
But yes, as a former English teacher, every single spelling error grates like fingernails down a blackboard!

someone who can spell is a step up from those that just make everything up :)
