Request: Last Friday's MX

| | Comments (4)

If anyone has a spare copy of last Friday's Mx newspaper (yes the free one, given out when you get off the train or in town, etc) then I'd appreciate it if you'd hang on to it. I still haven't seen it, in spite of the number of messages I've had from people who saw my profile in it last week.

That elusive aspiration... sleep

"Studies have found that proper sleeping patterns emerge only after you have caught up with up to 25 hours of missing sleep."

25 hours? Twenty-five????
Let me just say this: Never. Going. To. Happen.

The Dumb Kid (never the first child)

| | Comments (2)

New Scientist has published a piece on the relative IQs of children, noting that the first child is more likely to have an IQ that is higher than his/her younger siblings.

Keeping in mind that I am a younger sibling in my own family, I have to admit in my own experience the IQ situation agrees with the findings of this research. Nevertheless, as has been noted over and over, a higher IQ is no clear indicator of success in life. A high IQ may be a better indicator of financial success than socio-economic factors, but there is ample evidence that under-achievement can often be characteristic of intellectually gifted children.

What's actually interesting about this study is that it has identified social factors as a leading factor in IQ results. For decades it has been known that IQ tests are generally culturally biased (so if you are regarded as a native speaker and have been brought up in the region in which you take an IQ test your results are likely to be higher than those who are newer citizens of a culture), but now there is evidence that the effects of social environments on IQ are far more profound than initially indicated. What would be interesting is if the lower IQ of younger siblings could also be correlated with a higher EQ.

Clearing my head

| | Comments (1)

It's no surprise to those that know me that I haven't exactly been 100% for the past week. After spending yesterday virtually unable to function, I was determined to push through things and get some fresh air and exercise today. Only when I got up I knew I had to be far away from people and bustle. So I took two buses out to the Brisbane Forest Park and spent two glorious hours entirely alone on a forest trail, taking the 5km walk very slowly, and enjoying the silence, and the sound of bell birds calling to each other in the trees above. It was probably the best thing I could do to help clear my head.

Pictures from my walk are here: http://joannejacobs.net/digistills/BrisForest/. You can just pick out the black swans on Enoggera Reservoir but the kangaroo in the distance are just out of range of the camera. Never mind. I have those memories.

Hilarious

Those who know me well know that I have a rather insane, senior-citizen neighbour who shouts expletives to the other neighbours who make the slightest sound above a whisper. Well I've just had a visit from a ... well... rather fulsome 'lady of the night' who was booked to visit the residence of my afore-mentioned neighbour. She apparently climbed one flight of stairs too many!

I'm assuming that I and my neighbours can make rather a lot of noise tonight?

... just.

Class was great - final class for the semester and students gave presentations today, but to fit everyone in, class went an hour and a half over time and I am now completely shattered, I'm so tired.

But at least we got through it and now things may just head back to being close to normal again in another week or so. Thanks to everyone in my class for a great semester, and I wish you all well in your future ventures.
